Artificial Grass Drainage in the Miami Wet Season

The wet season runs roughly May to October and delivers short, heavy afternoon rain (https://www.weather.gov/mfl/, HTTP 200). A Miami yard either passes that water or holds it, and the decision is made in the layers under the grass rather than at the surface.

What ponding actually looks like

Water still standing hours after the rain stops. Soft, spongy spots underfoot along the low edge. Runoff held against the house, the patio slab or the block wall. Mosquito breeding in the low corner, which in Miami is a public health matter and not just an annoyance. None of these are surface failures: the grass is doing exactly what it was laid to do, and the water has nowhere to go.

The two causes, and why this ground makes both worse

The first cause is the aggregate. Dense road base, stone dust and a compacted sand bedding layer form a nearly impermeable crust, so water stops just below the backing. The second cause is the grade: a base laid flat, or falling toward the structure, has no outlet at all.

Miami-Dade makes both worse because of what sits under the yard. The county is mapped on oolitic limestone under a thin layer of sandy fill, and the USDA-NRCS Krome series is a very gravelly loam over that rock (https://soilseries.sc.egov.usda.gov/OSD_Docs/K/Krome.html, HTTP 200). Undisturbed, it drains very fast. Graded and compacted, it does not, and water that used to vanish sits on top of a compacted pad with nowhere to leave.

What a base that drains is made of

An open-graded, washed, angular aggregate keeps roughly 40 percent of its volume as void space, which is a continuous network of channels that passes water vertically instead of holding it. It goes over a non-woven geotextile laid on the compacted subgrade, under a thin bedding layer of clean chip stone. The whole assembly is graded with a fall away from the house to a legal outlet: a swale, a channel drain, or a tie-in to the lot drainage. Depth is 3 to 4 inches compacted for a lawn, deeper where dogs use the yard or where the subgrade holds water.

Two mistakes undo the whole thing: putting the separator fabric directly under the turf backing, where it becomes an absorbent pad, and using sand or stone dust to level the surface, which seals the base.

Repairing a base that was built wrong

There are three routes. Re-grade and add drainage aggregate under the existing surface. Add a channel drain at the low edge. Or install a French drain to an outlet. All of them mean lifting part of the surface, which is why the base is the line to get right first. Published repair bands put minor works at a few hundred dollars and a section rebuild at several thousand. Washed open-graded drainage stone is published at $52 per ton against $42 per ton for dense road base, and that difference is what a draining base costs.

How to test your own yard before you buy

Run a hose on the low corner of the yard for ten minutes and watch where the water goes. If it stands, if it runs toward the house, or if it disappears into the same spot every time, the drainage question is already answered and the surface is not the place to solve it. Do the same test again after a real downpour and compare: a spot that holds water in both tests will hold water under any surface.

Then look at the ground itself. Most Miami-Dade lots sit on oolitic limestone under a thin layer of sandy fill, so water that cannot pass the fill has nowhere to go, and the usual answer is a designed outlet rather than a product change. Ask the installer to show you, on a plan, where the water leaves the lot.

Frequently asked questions

Is ponding covered by the turf warranty?

Rarely. Turf warranties cover material, not the base. The workmanship warranty from the installer is the one that pays, and it is usually 1 to 5 years.

Can the grass be re-used when the base is fixed?

Sometimes. If the surface is sound, it can be lifted, the base corrected and the same grass re-laid. Where the aggregate is wrong, the base has to come out and the grass usually will not survive the process.

Does a French drain solve it?

It solves the outlet, not the base. A drain cannot move water that cannot reach it, so the aggregate has to pass water to the drain in the first place.

Does the grass type affect drainage?

The backing helps: a permeable, edge-to-edge flow backing passes water instead of holding it. But drainage is decided by the base and the outlet. A permeable backing over a sealed base just moves the ponding one layer down.

Artificial Grass services in Miami

Miami Artificial Grass Residential Grass

A residential artificial grass installation in Miami is a drainage and sub-base project that happens to end with grass on top. The lawn is the last two days of the job; the base is everything else.

Miami Artificial Grass Pet Grass

A pet yard is a plumbing problem with grass on top. Two dogs in a Miami wet season produce far more urine than a thin base can carry away, and the smell people blame on the grass is ammonia from a base that holds water.

Miami Artificial Grass Playground Grass

A playground surface is specified by what happens when a child falls on it. The grass is the top layer of a safety system, and the layer under it, the shock pad, is the part a cheap quote leaves out.

Miami Artificial Grass Putting Greens

A putting green is the most precisely built surface in this trade. The ball tells the truth about the base, and a green laid over an uneven pad will not roll true no matter what the turf costs.

Miami Artificial Grass Commercial Grass

Commercial work is judged on documents as much as on the surface. A property manager needs a specification, a drainage plan, a wind detail and a warranty schedule that survives an insurance review, not a square-foot price.
